  West Cork Weekend 2014

The annual West Cork Weekend came about through the need to give ringing in the area a "shot in the arm" following the installation of a new ring of six bells at Skibbereen, and the restoration of the long unringable five bells at Rosscarbery Cathedral (since augmented to six).
The basic idea was to get some experienced ringers to come to the area, from within Ireland and the UK, who would help with training sessions at the local towers, including the six bells at Bandon as well as Skibbereen and Rosscarbery. Over time, the emphasis somehow shifted towards giving the visitors more attention than the local ringers, which was never what the event was meant to be about.
In 2012, it was suggested by some that it maybe should be the last such event. After some thought, we decided to carry on having the annual weekend, but with the organization being undertaken locally, putting the needs of the three local bands firmly back in the forefront. So, the 2013 West Cork Ringing Weekend took place over the weekend of 13, 14 and 15th of September. Moving the date back to September proved to be a good move, as the amount of people who came to help exceeded all of our expectations.
The organizers are very grateful to everyone who took the trouble to come to West Cork for the weekend to help us! The 2014 West Cork Weekend will take place over the weekend of 12th, 13th and 14th of September, and will follow the usual format.
For those arriving on the Thursday evening (11th), there will be open ringing at Rosscarbery from 7 to 9pm. This will include an introduction and briefing session for those who volunteer to run sessions of ringing which will take place during the Friday and Saturday at our three six bell towers, Skibbereen (3cwt), Rosscarbery (12cwt) and Bandon (14cwt). Visitors can choose how much ringing they want to help with, so as to make time for sightseeing, etc. As usual, a certain amount of free accommodation with local ringers will be made available for those who need it.
We can also help with suggestions for hotels, B&Bs etc. Quarter peals will be organized on an "as required" basis, remembering that the weekend is primarily for helping the local ringers to improve their ringing by providing a steady band around them, a luxury that is rarely available to them! As usual, there will be a get together for a meal on the Saturday night, which is usually followed by a midnight quarter peal at Skibbereen for those who either haven't had enough ringing or who are a little mad or tipsy, and following Sunday ringing, there will be a lunchtime buffet at our house near Drinagh, with ringing on our 12 bell mini ring.
After this, there will be the opportunity to ring on the twelve bells at St Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork City, and then people can choose either to go and listen to the carillon recital at Cobh, the Republic of Ireland’s only carillon, consisting of 49 bells, with a 67cwt bass bell, or to visit the bell tower of St Anne’s Church, Shandon, Cork city, and chime the famous Shandon bells, all of which will be on the way home for those heading to Cork Airport, or to Rosslare Ferryport.
If any ringers would like to come to this quite remote and very beautiful outpost of Change Ringing for the weekend of 12, 13 and 14th of September, help our local ringers to improve, and enjoy some good old fashioned hospitality, please do get in touch, either with me, Martin Hough, tel 00353 28 30118,
