West Cork Ringing Festival
7th - 10th September 2017
It's about that time of year when we start to think ahead, and begin making plans for the annual West Cork weekend.
West Cork, Ireland, is what the area covering the south west corner of County Cork, Ireland's largest county, is known as. It currently is home to three six bell towers (Rosscarbery Cathedral, Bandon, and Skibbereen), there is also a 12 bell mini ring, owned by my wife Jane and myself. St Fin Barre's Cathedral in Cork city has a lovely 27cwt ring of twelve. There is to be a new ring of eight bells within County Cork, at St Mary's Church, Dunmanway, and all being well, there will be the opportunity to ring these bells as part of our annual weekend, which is a "shot in the arm" for the ringers in this very beautiful, but quite remote outpost of change ringing.
The basic idea is that we invite ringers from the UK and beyond to come to West Cork for the weekend, primarily to give the ringers from the towers mentioned above the opportunity to try to ring things that they are learning with the unusual luxury of a steady band around them, a kind of intensive weekend ringing course, if you like.
Things normally kick off with the Thursday evening practice at Rosscarbery, and on the Friday and Saturday there are morning and afternoon ringing sessions, at two, or all three of the towers, depending on how many people are taking part. It is normally possible for people to go off for sightseeing, etc, for part of the time, and quarters or sometimes peals are possible, remembering of course that the prime reason for the event is to help the local ringers to progress a bit. We usually have a get together on the Saturday evening, for a meal and a bit of entertainment, and on the Sunday there is always a free lunch (yes, it really does exist!) at our place, with ringing on our mini ring. This is followed by ringing at St Fin Barre's cathedral, Cork, which concludes the weekend.
For those on a tight budget, a certain amount of free accommodation is available with some of the local ringers, this is on a first come, first served basis.
We know that it is a "big ask" to expect people to give their time and money to come to a far flung outpost of ringing, and forget their own ringing agendas for a few days in order to give us a hand, but we'd like to ask it anyway!
A warm welcome is assured, as is our gratefulness!
